Messaging overview

PassPlay's campaign system — what it can send, to whom, and how messages are tracked.

The Messaging area is where you build, schedule, and review campaigns to your members. Campaigns can target everyone, a specific membership type or level, or a hand-picked list of memberships.

Campaign types

A campaign’s type determines the channel used and what additional fields are available:

Type

Channel

Use case

Invitation

Email

“Getting started” invites with onboarding instructions.

Email

Email

General-purpose email campaigns.

Push

Push

Native app push to members who’ve installed and connected the app.

Reward

Push

Directly send a reward item to members with a push notification.

Points

Push

Directly award points to members with a push notification.

Email — Reward

Email

Email version of a reward send.

Email — Points

Email

Email version of a points award.

Which types are available depends on which features are enabled for your org:

  • Invitation is always available.

  • Push and the related types require the Push Notifications feature.

  • Email (general-purpose) and the email reward/points types require the Email Campaigns feature.

  • Reward and Points types require the Loyalty feature.

If a type isn’t in the dropdown when you create a campaign, the underlying feature isn’t enabled. Contact us for more information if you are interested in getting access to additional features.

Campaign statuses

Status

Description

Draft

You started building this campaign but haven’t scheduled it. Editable.

Ready to Send

Scheduled to send. Remains editable until it actually goes out.

Sent

Already delivered to recipients. Read-only, no further edits.

Filter the campaign list by status to find work-in-progress vs. historical sends.

Wallet push notifications

If a membership has connected to a wallet, but not to an app, push campaigns may be sent as native wallet notifications. These notifications are only sent as a fallback and are subject to the following platform restrictions:

Limitation

Apple Wallet

Google Wallet

Content

Single plain-text field

Header, body and link

Quota

No hard cap, but we keep in line with Google Wallet for consistency and avoiding Apple’s hidden rate limits

Max of 3 notifying messages per pass in 24 hours. Above that limit the message is still added to the pass, but no notification is sent.

Appearance

Displays plain-text content on lock screen, tapping goes to pass

Displays generic “notification received” on lock screen, tapping goes to pass where content is displayed

The Google limit applies to each wallet pass, which is one pass for each membership. The Apple alert is sent to each device that holds the pass, so a member with a phone and a tablet gets one alert on each device.

For more info, look at the platform documentation: Google Wallet and Apple PassKit.
