Nested audiences

How to combine custom audience segments to make more complex combinations.

Audiences in PassPlay are designed to be easy to start using, but also extensible for more complex use cases. One of the ways this is achieved is through nested audiences, which allow you to make rulesets that combine members from other audiences that you have already created. To create a nested audience, you’ll have to have one other audience that already exists in your organization. Then, you can create or edit a new audience. In one of the rules, you can select the Audience filter property and select another audience.

This will filter by checking if a membership qualifies for the audience you have selected. You can also nest multiple audiences in a chain. For example:

Audience A depends on → Audience B depends on → Audience C

This allows for powerful filtering that doesn’t require you to maintain an audience rule set with lots of rules. It is worth noting that you cannot have any loops within your nested audiences. For example, PassPlay will not allow you to save the following rule in an audience:

Audience A depends on → Audience B depends on → Audience A

Nested audiences do not provide new functionality - any audience selection that can be done with nested audiences can be done without them too. Whether or not you think your organization can benefit from nested audiences is up to your discernment.
